Psychometric testing


What is this?

Psychometric tests are powerful tools which can be used for the selection, development and management of employees. When used for selection purposes they can provide a wide range of additional relevant information over and above that obtained from more traditional assessment methods and they can help an organisation to achieve better and fairer selection decisions. Research has shown that using valid, well designed ability tests predicts job performance better than most other individual assessment methods, such as traditional interviewing.

Types of psychometric tests

Broadly psychometric tests used for recruitment purposes fall into two categories: ability tests and personality questionnaires. See Ability testing » and personality profiling »

  • Psychometric testing works most effectively when it is run alongside a wider range of valid assessment options. These could include: structured interviews, assessment centres etc.
  • Psychometric tests can only be sold to qualified and licensed practitioners. Ability tests can only be administered and scored by a Level A British Psychological Society (BPS) (or equivalent) qualified practitioner; personality questionnaires can only be administered by a Level A practitioner and can only be assessed by a Level B practitioner.
